*Star* Teacher--Jackie Clark

Today's *STAR* Teacher from Norman Elementary is...

Jackie Clark
2nd Grade

How many years have you been teaching?
This is my 28th year.

What is your best memory?
I laugh every day. I find my students to be very amusing. One of my students yelled out in class one day, "Honolulu it's Friday!"

Can you share a reading strategy?
One of the things we work on in second grade is automaticity. The students come to second grade with many strategies for reading. We strive to make those strategies automatic by using DOLCH word phrases, word speed drills, and other fluency techniques.

Can you share a math strategy?
Many children at the second grade level are still in the concrete operational stage of development. This means that they still need a lot of hands on work in math with concrete tools. The more they can manipulate objects to solve math problems, word problems, and place value, the more they are likely to understand the math concept. The move to pencil/paper tasks should come after the hands on portion. Teachers sometimes make the mistake of moving to pencil/paper tasks too soon.

What advice to you have for teachers just coming into the field?
Learn your job, don't just do your job. Seek out the veteran teachers. Ask them questions about the best practices that they use. Observe lessons when possible to learn new techniques.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
My personal "Mission" statement is one that I have followed from the very beginning of my teaching career 28 years ago...

"Come to the edge."
"We can't. We are afraid."
"Come to the edge."
"We can't. We will fall."
And they came...
And he pushed them...
And they flew.
