Today's *STAR* Teacher from Norman Elementary is...
Jackie Ringler
1st Grade
*How many
years have you been teaching?
27 years
*What is
your best memory?
There have been many, but the year I had a blind student was
by far the most memorable year. I still reflect on things that she opened my
eyes to, both in and out of the classroom.
*What is your funniest
memory?
When colleagues get together and share humorous things that
our children do and say.—our “Candid
Camera” moments.
*Can you share a
reading strategy or best practice?
Here’s a twist to small group oral reading: Popcorn Reading, It’s really not a big
deal, but the kids love it and they follow along better because they want to
read next. The reader gets to pick the next reader and so on until everyone has
a turn or two. The teacher can be picked too—which they love. Everyone gets
their spotlight moment and it’s peer generated.
*Can you
share a math strategy or best practice?
Make and use the “I have___, Who has___?” practice cards for
any math concept. It involves and engages all of your students.
Halloween Art Project
"I Can" Statements
Project Tree
(It's always fun to see the new projects that Jackie hangs on her tree.)
Reading Station
Science Station
Spelling Word Wall
*What
advice do you have for teachers just coming into the field?
Everyone’s teaching styles and strategies are different, so
borrow ideas from your colleagues and see which ones are a fit for you. There’s
no ONE right way.
*Do you have
anything else you’d like to share?
Put some FUN into your academics. When your students reflect
back in 5-10 years, what will they remember? Art and educational projects,
singing, playing, educational games, outdoor academics and seasonal fun projects.
(Of course they will be smarter from all of your great teaching, but that’s not
what they’ll remember in years to come—create “Kodak Moments” along the way)
Thanks for sharing Jackie!
